Who Says Easter is Pagan?

Just like during Christmas, there are always naysayers who want to dampen the joy of celebrating the wonderful things God has done for us through Christ. Both Christmas and Easter mark extraordinary moments—the incarnation and the resurrection. Neither of these celebrations has pagan roots! History shows that Christians have consistently upheld the integrity of these sacred occasions, protecting them from pagan influences.

Let’s take a moment to fact-check some common misconceptions about Easter.

Key evidence supporting a non-pagan origin includes:

  • Jewish Roots: Easter is not a pagan holiday; it is deeply rooted in the Jewish Passover (Pascha). Early Christians referred to the festival as Pascha, directly linking it to Passover, which occurs around the same time.
  • Lack of Historical Evidence for Eostre: The idea that Easter derives from a pagan goddess named Eostre or Ostara is based on a passing reference by the Venerable Bede in the 8th century. Unfortunately, this claim lacks substantial support from other historical texts, archaeological evidence, or records of her worship.
  • Name Origin: The term “Easter” likely comes from Eosturmonath (a Saxon month), which itself referred to the season of Spring, not necessarily a deity.
  • Origin of Symbols: Easter eggs originated from fasting practices during Lent (when eggs were forbidden and then gifted), not from pagan fertility rituals.

While some secularized, popular traditions have spring-related motifs, the core religious event of Easter is historically anchored in the Christian faith and tradition.

As for the Easter Bunny? Well, I don’t know too many churches that push the Easter Bunny into the spot light, but I think it’s always been more about a little fun with the kiddos… just like Santa Clause.

If you’re on the hunt for some beautifully decorated Easter eggs, you’ve got to check out the Wendish Museum in Serbin, Texas! It’s not just any place; it’s the home of my ancestors, and trust me, they really know how to celebrate and adorn Easter eggs in style!
